Dan Savage
Sex columnist and inventor of the t-shirt, Dav Savage came to Carleton this week. He wasn't on a tour or anything, our LGBTQ (don't ask me why they have the Q) association asked him out and he said yes! He did a talk on the It Gets Better campaign, which is a place where adults from the LGBT community can post open messages to kids who are suffering bullying and discrimination at school and at home. I think he said the channel on Youtube has received 40million watches so far. His talk had some pretty sad content, but he kept the mood light. One good point he brought up was the insanity of Ontario's public funding for religious school; this was brought on by this story about how the Halton school board banned Gay-Straight alliance clubs. He also answered questions, and we had two pretty awesome ones, which I will not repeat here.

The fact that there are publicly funded catholic schools is totally insane. People don't really think about it though. We need more secularism I think. I believe its the British North America Act that preserved catholic schools in Ontario and protestant ones in Quebec. Something like that couldn't be more outdated.
If you have a better way of protecting the Catholic French minority in Ontario I'd like to hear it...
